“What is the one thing people will always need? It’s obvious: printers. Printers with fax machines attached, printers that collate and staple, perhaps a printer that makes photocopies. Anything’s possible. It’s called innovation.” —Tim Cook, The Onion
“girlfriends historically have hated dune” Justin
“We believe that we’re on the face of the earth to make great products and that’s not changing. We’re constantly focusing on innovating. We believe in the simple, not the complex. We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products that we make. And participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution. We believe in saying no to thousands of projects so that we can really focus on the few that are truly important and meaningful to us. We believe in deep collaboration and cross-pollenization of our groups which allow us to innovate in ways that others cannot. And frankly, we don’t settle for anything less than excellence in every group in the company — and we have the self honesty to admit when we’re wrong and the courage to change.” —Tim Cook, 2009
  • Me: My mind is more occupied with the fact that I'M GOING TO BE DEAD IN LESS THAN 100 YEARS. AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Topher: HOLY FUCK I ALMOST FORGOT THAT TOO FUCK AHAHHHHHHHHHHHH

One of the weirdest feelings — I swam to an island yesterday.

“The most interesting aspect of Google Plus is the exercise of bucketing and prioritizing friends. This triage was the most introspective experience I’ve had on a social network. It was more like an experiential art piece concerning the digitization of relationships than a sign-in process.” Drew Breunig
“You guys know how on Jerry Seinfeld's website...” Tyler Faux (Tumblr’s superbly talented intern.)

Design at Tumblr

I started designing themes three years ago when I first fell in love with Tumblr. I loved that I could finally have a blog I was proud of. I felt like the team making this was doing all the right things. A little while later I started doing contract work for Tumblr, and eventually moved to New York to design here full time.

The team was tiny, and still is today. The product team has grown from three to five since I started nearly three years ago. But the community has grown enormously. Today we’re a Top 25 site in the U.S., approaching its 10 billionth post.

Our process for evolving Tumblr hasn’t changed much either. Here’s how it goes: A small group of us will get together and talk about the problem we want to solve. Sometimes this is in our meeting room, or on the way to lunch, or around someone’s desk. Then the designer goes off and uses their own process to get a mockup as close as possible to the final product. We’ll gather around the monitor while the designer talks about all the decisions they made along the way. Most of the time we’ll start building it the same day.

I’m looking for a designer to join us in New York City and help us make Tumblr the best place in the world for the most creative people in the world. If you obsess over details, like working in small groups, and care deeply about product design, email us. You’ll work with an unbelievably talented team and build things that hundreds of millions of people use.
