Me? Oh I’m just chillin to Fred Seibert’s massive library of official Hanna-Barbera Cartoons’ sound FX.
Favorite so far is Gun, Rifle Single Shot. It has plenty of room for acolytes and the occasional surprise for outsiders, in this case a recurring, choppy funk-scratch chord that betrays an unusual but unmistakable James Brown influence. The syncopated bit is interwoven, as usual, with the usual time changes, drum-circle shakiness, and the typically madrigal antiphony of circling Longstreth’s wild interjections. With no out-of-box screeching or forced weirdness and just two easy-rolling parts signaling back and forth, “Gun, Rifle Single Shot” feels less fussy and suffocating than this it can be, from the bluesy looseness down to the half-wrote title. But also a bit less compelling.*
* K that’s actually a review on Pitchfork but it works, trust me
