I started designing themes three years ago when I first fell in love with Tumblr. I loved that I could finally have a blog I was proud of. I felt like the team making this was doing all the right things. A little while later I started doing contract work for Tumblr, and eventually moved to New York to design here full time.
The team was tiny, and still is today. The product team has grown from three to five since I started nearly three years ago. But the community has grown enormously. Today we’re a Top 25 site in the U.S., approaching its 10 billionth post.
Our process for evolving Tumblr hasn’t changed much either. Here’s how it goes: A small group of us will get together and talk about the problem we want to solve. Sometimes this is in our meeting room, or on the way to lunch, or around someone’s desk. Then the designer goes off and uses their own process to get a mockup as close as possible to the final product. We’ll gather around the monitor while the designer talks about all the decisions they made along the way. Most of the time we’ll start building it the same day.
I’m looking for a designer to join us in New York City and help us make Tumblr the best place in the world for the most creative people in the world. If you obsess over details, like working in small groups, and care deeply about product design, email us. You’ll work with an unbelievably talented team and build things that hundreds of millions of people use.
